John Williams, then 80 years old, also began serving beer that year.
He is still working behind the same bar in the Powys village of Carno 60 years later, but he is now the landlord.
John stated, "I enjoy the stories from the customers, and just hearing what they're up to. It's a way of life.".
They're pleasant company. I cannot imagine working in any other capacity. ".
Over the years, John has witnessed a number of changes, including those in the cost and variety of beverages.
No lager was available in 1963, according to John, who also recalled the availability of Whitbread Tankard, Ind Coope, and mild, a dark ale.
There was a lot of maintenance at the time, and everything depended on the pumps.
"I needed to let it out, and maybe a couple of weeks would pass before some barrels were ready.
But now that they're straight on, they still call it real ale when they get off the truck. But I doubt it's real ale like it once was.
When I first started, a pint cost 11 pence; later, the price increased to a shilling.
The spirits "were quite a bit more expensive," according to John.
You didn't want to play in a round with a man who consumed alcohol, he said. "I believe a bottle of whisky cost two shillings and sixpence. ".
The name of his bar is T Brith.
At least that is what the name on the outside sign says; however, among the locals, it is known as Carno Club, and regulars refer to John by the nicknames JC or "Johnny Club.". .
John recalled the heyday of the Laura Ashley factory in Carno when looking back at the village's past.
At its headquarters in the 1960s and 1970s-growing village, the company employed hundreds of people.
"Whether or not you worked there, Laura Ashley was beneficial to everyone. Everyone was earning large sums of money. .
"People appeared to be having a great time. Although Bernard and Laura Ashley were nearby, they refrained from entering. With everyone, they got along well. " .
The Welsh singing duo Tony and Aloma, who arrived to perform in T Brith in 1984, owned a hotel in Blackpool, where club members would travel every year to stay. .
John recalled that the club once featured gaming devices, a pool table, and a dart board, but dominoes was the main attraction. Two of the club's teams competed in a league near Newtown. .
According to John, the biggest modification is that more families now frequent the bar.
"When I first started, men predominated and women stayed home to care for the kids. But, especially in the last ten years, it has changed. Like a family outing, Friday night is.
"Parents and children from Carno Primary School are here. Apparently, they ask each other in the schoolyard - 'are you going to the club tonight?'.
"They call me 'Johnny Five' because they come here at 17:00. ".
Many pubs have closed in the decades since John started working behind his bar.

John has continued operating despite rising costs, keeping his bar open seven days a week.
John said his bar's success was down to the strong local community.
The best thing is having happy customers, and we've been working to keep our prices as low as we can.
"The biggest problem [for other pubs] is that many have to pay rent and have to raise beer prices, more than I do. .
"I'm a free house and therefore can choose what I want to sell. " .
Sixty years on, John said it was too late now for him to do anything else. .
"It's not worth me starting another career now!" .
