Adjoa Andoh: Ofcom won't take action regarding ITV's "terribly white" remark

On February 25, 2023, Adjoa Andoh makes her way to the 54th Annual NAACP Image Awards at Pasadena Civic Auditorium...

Adjoa Andoh, an actress, said that the King's Coronation was "terribly white," but Ofcom will not take enforcement action.

The actress made the remark during ITV's coverage of the coronation, and more than 8,000 people complained to the broadcast regulator about it.

On the balcony of Buckingham Palace, the Bridgerton star was talking about members of the royal family.

The watchdog claimed that viewers took issue with Tom Bradby and Chris Ship of ITV News bringing up the remark.

"Looking at all those young people, there is a little bit of me that has gone from the rich diversity of [Westminster] Abbey to the awful white balcony," Andoh remarked. That really gets me. ".

Her comments continued to receive the most complaints from the watchdog about a television moment in 2023 on Monday, according to Ofcom.

"We have concluded our assessment of complaints we received about a comment made during ITV's coverage of King Charles III's coronation, and can confirm we will not be pursuing these further," the regulator said in a statement.

"We received 8,371 complaints from viewers about a remark made by actress Adjoa Andoh during the live broadcast, which focused on the appearance of the royal family on the Buckingham Palace balcony. ".

"While we understand some viewers had strong feelings about this comment, after careful consideration we have concluded that the comment was a personal observation that was part of a wide-ranging panel discussion that also touched on other diversity-related topics, and that contained a range of viewpoints," the regulator continued.

"Our choice not to pursue these complaints further also considers the freedom of speech rights of broadcasters and guests. ".

In May, Andoh, who portrays Lady Agatha Danbury in the Netflix historical drama Bridgerton, released a statement in response to the criticism.

During the service at Westminster Abbey, she claimed that King Charles prayed "lovingly, reflecting his wide embrace of the rich, diverse peoples celebrating his coronation.".

"I was just caught by the visual shift on the balcony, not a particularly original observation," she continued, "sitting in the warmth of that intentionally wide embrace.

No one was meant to be offended, I promise. I've been praising the King for many years because he founded the Prince's Trust [charity], cares about all religions, supports the arts, and will continue to do so. It's a momentous time in our history. ".

Andoh has previously starred in Doctor Who, The Bill, Casualty, and EastEnders. She frequently makes appearances as a commentator on news shows, such as BBC Radio 4's Broadcasting House.
