Irish rock band Aslan's singer Christy Dignam passed away after a protracted illness.
On behalf of the family, his daughter Kiera posted on Facebook to share the news of his passing.
The news was delivered, she claimed, "with a broken heart" by the family.
"After a valiantly long-fought battle, Dad peacefully passed away at home today, Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at 4 p.m., surrounded by his family.
In this extremely difficult time, we ask that you respect our family's need for privacy, the post said.
"Let us all cherish the extraordinary life of a gifted singer, a master storyteller, and an incredible person by keeping him in our hearts. ".
Christy Dignam was raised in Finglas, a neighborhood in the city's north, where she was born in Dublin in May 1960.
His musical career began in 1980 with the band Meelah XVIII, but he is best known as the lead singer of the Irish rock band Aslan.
In 1982, he founded Aslan with Joe Jewell, Billy McGuinness, and Alan Downey, all natives of Dublin.
The band's name is derived from the lion in CS Lewis's Narnia book series.
Six studio albums were later released by them, with the most recent coming out in 2012.
These were, Crazy World, Where's the Sun, Shine a Light, and This Is among their most popular singles.
Following what was supposed to be a one-time charity concert in Finglas in 1993, the group that had split up in 1988 came back together.
Mr. Dignam stated: "From the time I can remember, I've just wanted to sing" in an interview with Irish broadcaster RTÉ in 2022. I've always wanted to do just that.
When I was 13 or 14, I recall realizing that just because I wanted to be a singer didn't mean I would actually become one. It had to happen, so I did. ".
He overcame many challenges throughout his life, including drug addiction, childhood sexual abuse, and incapacitating depression episodes.
Mr. Dignam received an amyloidosis diagnosis in 2013 and was initially given a possible life expectancy of only a few months.
Organ failure is brought on by the disease's accumulation of an abnormal protein in the body.
He told the Irish Mirror in 2014 that he was surprised to have lived to be 50 years old. He said, "I was in a plane crash a couple of years ago, I struggled with drug addiction, and now this cancer thing, so it is kind of a Lazarus thing.
"That's three lives gone; I still have six.". ".
He claimed that following the diagnosis, being with his family for a little while longer was the only thing that mattered to him.
Now that I have grandchildren, I wanted to attend their First Communions and Confirmations—those special occasions that you want to be present for, he said.
This summer, Aslan was scheduled to tour the Republic of Ireland and give a performance at the Millennium Forum in Londonderry on July 15.
However, the other members of Aslan stated on their social media pages that they were "devastated that all future shows will be cancelled" because of Mr. Dignam's poor health.
In addition to his wife Kathryn, Mr. Dignam is survived by his granddaughter Ava, sons Cian and Jake, and Kiera, who is also a singer.
