"It's a fact that rock is less relevant culturally than it once was. ".
Straight talk from Bobby, the band's frontman, but some fans agree with him.
It's also something that, arguably, has been reflected in recent years' major festival lineups, which have opted for more pop and hip-hop acts.
However, the UK's largest rock and metal festival, which celebrated its 20th anniversary over the weekend, drew a sold-out crowd of about 100,000 spectators to Donington Park.
What will alternative music be like in the next 20 years, both visually and sonically?
From backstage at Download Festival, Bobby tells BBC Newsbeat, "The scene, the genre, the subculture, and the people within it have done a great job at killing it.".
Drummer Bobbie, who supports the idea that "fresh blood" should be given more opportunities in the sector, agrees that "they're closing doors.".
After winning the award for best album at the Kerrang! Awards, the punk rock and grime band Bob Vylan was named best alternative music act at the 2022 Mobo Awards.
Because we kind of forced our way through, Bobbie explains, "What we've done has been praised so much.".
"That shouldn't be the only option. It doesn't help that an enormous festival features two days of headlining bands from the 1980s. " .
He is referring to Metallica closing out Download's main stage on Thursday and Saturday.
Bobby, who thinks Metallica are "great," continues, "Obviously, you have to have a huge headliner to draw people in. Give them one set instead; why are they playing two? ".
The Download organizers have been contacted by Newsbeat for a response.
Bobby warns that if the scene doesn't change, it will lose popularity like disco and that "it's only natural things will change.". .
"Download needs to adapt and diversify if it wants to continue existing for another 20 years. ".
However, other bands are more upbeat about the changes the scene is undergoing.
Creeper keyboardist and vocalist Hannah Greenwood predicts that it will only keep growing over the next 20 years.
"Women are better represented at festivals than they were when I started in 2015,".
"Getting more women into music is the main goal, but we're making progress. " .
Hannah also draws attention to the function that social media is playing in opening doors for a new generation of followers.
"Thanks to TikTok, people who avoided metal and rock fans are now saying, 'Oh, actually, sick.
"I think outsiders are now viewing it in a different light, even though it has always been an inclusive scene. ".
Hannah claims though that the rock group from Southampton has so far resisted the pressure and temptation to seek views and clicks.
Lorna Shore has experience with blowing up on TikTok.
Will Ramos, the vocalist for the deathcore band, rose to prominence as one of the rising young stars of modern metal after videos of his vocal performances went viral and were followed by footage of fans trying to imitate them.
After performing on Download's main stage, Will tells Newsbeat that social media is the best marketing strategy anyone could ask for.
Additionally, some of the biggest names in metal have become interested in the New Jersey band as a result of its success.
After witnessing Lorna Shore develop into "arguably, probably, the heaviest band that's ever been on the main stage," Parkway Drive frontman Winston McCall exclaims, "They're killing it.".
After returning from a tour break, Parkway Drive co-headlined the festival's final night.
According to Winston, it was likely the best thing we've ever done.
After struggling for 17 years to make it in the music business, we finally realized that's what we needed.
"If any band ever asks me, "Hey, what's the key to success?," I would tell them to take care of their mental health. " .
Winston thinks that the positive response they got from discussing the matter openly is a sign that the rock and metal scene is becoming less macho.
"When we decided to be that open about it, we thought that if we could learn anything from this situation, let's pay it forward - let's be open, so we can set an example. " .
After the "major challenge" of the Covid pandemic, the Australian band went on hiatus, but according to Winston, "it's awesome to see how strong it [Download] has come back.".
"It's wonderful to see the enduring interest in alternative and extreme music. " .
And all bands concur that there is an "appetite" for music.
The fans are prepared for change and new music, according to Bobbie.
"I predict Bob Vylan will perform on the main stage well in advance of the 40th anniversary. " .
