Inability to sing his final songs due to vocal issues prevented Lewis Capaldi from finishing his Glastonbury set on Saturday night.
The show was meant to be a comeback after Capaldi canceled three weeks of performances to "rest and recover" due to health concerns.
His voice soon became strained, and he looked defeated as he left the stage, despite the enthusiastic response from the audience.
He apologized profusely to Glastonbury. "I've got a little self-disgust. ".
He hinted toward the end of the set that he would need to take more time off from the spotlight to rest.
"I think I'll take another brief break over the next few weeks. So I doubt you'll see much of me the rest of the year, if at all.
I hope you're still interested in watching us when I do return and when I do see you, though. ".
The singer mostly kept quiet while his band performed Someone You Love, being carried along by the audience's warm support.
He declared as he left, "I genuinely dreamed of doing this. "This has been enough even if I never get to do it again. ".
The singer's candor in discussing his battles with anxiety and the demands of fame has been remarkably brave.
He revealed that he was diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome a year ago, and he most recently made an appearance in a Netflix documentary that explored his mental health problems.
He admitted to the director Joe Pearlman that he felt completely out of touch with reality during panic attacks. 'I can't breathe. My inhalation is not felt. My head spins. My head feels as though it is experiencing some sort of change. I'm getting hot.
"The big thing with it for me is that I'll always feel like this because this is who I am now. ".
After his second album, Broken by Desire to Be Heavenly Sent, was released earlier this year, he discovered that the demands of touring and promotion were negatively affecting him.
He announced on social media on June 5 that he was canceling every tour date leading up to Glastonbury so that he could rest.
He wrote, "The past few months have been full-on both mentally and physically. I haven't been home properly since Christmas, and right now I am finding it difficult to cope. ".
"I need to take some time to unwind and recharge so that I can be at my best and prepared for Glastonbury and all of the other amazing shows coming up so that I can keep doing what I love for a very long time. ".
When he entered Glastonbury's main stage, he was greeted with cheers fit for a hero, drawing a crowd comparable to that which saw Arctic Monkeys perform on Friday.
After performing Forget Me and Forever (which was unexpectedly cut short by a fly-by from the Red Arrows), the crowd began chanting, "Ohhh, Lewis Capaldi," to the tune of the White Stripes' Seven Nation Army.
He chastised, "That's enough. "Jack White shouldn't profit from this situation, in my opinion. " .
He started to act frustrated as the chorus went on though.
"I imagine all of you would make awful partners. Your attention to detail is amazing. Please allow me to gently tease you. ".
He teased the audience as he introduced Pointless by joking that he had co-written the song with "fellow ginger" Ed Sheeran.
And with that, ladies and gentlemen, he said. Eddie Sheeran. isn't present. ".
However, his voice started to sound fractured and raspy by the fifth song.
"I'm truly sorry. The first of many excuses he made was, "You've all come out and my voice is really packing in.
He persisted despite the fact that the problems were clearly upsetting him and his Tourette's symptoms were starting to show.
The audience was consistently on his side despite his obvious distress.
The woman sitting next to me extended her arms and said, "You just play as many as you want, babe," as he hinted that he might only be able to finish two songs of his set.
. "
