Near the location where British actor Julian Sands vanished, hikers in the US discovered human remains.
The south Californian county sheriff's office in San Bernardino stated on Saturday that identification should be finished next week.
Sands, 65, vanished on January 13 while out for a hike in the San Gabriel Mountains to the north of Los Angeles.
His performances in the TV dramas 24 and Smallville, as well as the Oscar-winning film A Room With A View, are what made him most famous.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), in which he costarred with Daniel Craig, was one of his other acting roles.
During bad weather, sands vanished in the Baldy Bowl region.
According to the sheriff's office, "citizen hikers contacted the Fontana Sheriff's Station after they discovered human remains in the Mt. Baldy wilderness.".
The statement provided no further information.
Early this week, the family of Sands released a statement in which they expressed their gratitude to "the search teams and coordinators who have worked tirelessly to find Julian.".
"We continue to hold Julian in our hearts with bright memories of him as a great father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer," they said.
