In order to premiere a new Disney+ series that brings the characters from the popular 1997 movie together, The Full Monty's cast traveled back to Sheffield.
At Monday's premiere in the city where the movie and television show are set, Robert Carlyle, Mark Addy, and Lesley Sharp were present.
The creator of the Full Monty, Simon Beaufoy, and the co-writer of the series, Alice Nutter, chose not to participate due to the ongoing US writers' strike.
Instead, they gathered outside the theater to picket the occasion while toting signs.
The author of the original Oscar-winning film, Beaufoy, was holding a sign that read, "The Full Monty. It is about, with, and for people. No AI. ".
Nutter made mention of the premiere in his message. It read, "We love this show but we're unable to attend - fair deal for writers.".
Both belong to the Writers Guild of America, which has advised its members not to work during the strike for US businesses because studios are underpaying writers in the streaming era.
Before the show's debut, Beaufoy and Nutter released the following statement: "We worked on The Full Monty TV series for more than three years.
"We genuinely love this show and want to be at the premiere, but as WGA writers, we won't be participating in promotion until the strike is over.
We place too much importance on the ongoing strike and the fight for a just contract for writers. ".
After 26 years have passed since the events of the movie "The Full Monty," in which several unemployed men turned to stripping, the eight-part television series catches up with the characters.
The Telegraph gave the new version three stars and noted that it "firmly wears its politics on its sleeve - with mixed success.".
According to Michael Hogan, a critic of the paper, "the issues will be all too familiar, especially to those in neglected communities.".
If the original's optimism is present. That's the point—this is a stark reminder of how far we still have to go. ".
The striptease "makes a half-hearted reprise," he said, but it "no longer drives the narrative.".
"Despite the grimy kitchen sink atmosphere, there are glimmers of hope in the community spirit. ".
Hugo Speer, who played Guy but was fired during filming due to "allegations of inappropriate conduct" on set, wasn't present at the premiere.
The actor said in a statement to the Daily Mail over the weekend that a runner had interrupted him as he changed in his trailer and that he "didn't believe I'd done anything wrong.".
After all these years in the business, he declared, "I'm not going to start turning into a flasher.". When I learned that I had caused some of the crew to feel "uncomfortable," I was astonished.
