US judge backs settlement with family of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins

Following the passing of the cinematographer on a movie set, a judge has approved a settlement agreement for the family of Halyna Hutchins.

Alec Baldwin's prop gun that was being used for the movie Rust accidentally discharged, killing Ms. Hutchins in 2021.

In 2022, attorneys for Ms. Hutchins' husband Matthew and their son Andros sued Baldwin and the other producers of the movie for wrongful death.

Later in the same year, a confidential settlement was reached.

Judge Bryan Biedscheid of the United States approved that agreement on Thursday, allowing the minor Andros to receive "periodic payments" between the ages of 18 and 22.

The settlement was "fair, appropriate, and in the best interests of Andros Hutchins, a minor, a protected person," according to the order.

In accordance with the settlement, Matthew Hutchins will also take on the role of executive producer on the western movie Rust, which recently started shooting in Montana.

Prosecutors in New Mexico dropped manslaughter charges against Mr. Baldwin, who was in possession of the prop gun that discharged the fatal bullet, in April. He had asserted his innocence.

According to a lawyer for Ms. Hutchins' parents and sister, the actor "cannot escape responsibility" for her passing.
