MPs will decide whether to support a report that found Boris Johnson intentionally misled Parliament regarding lockdown parties at No. 10 later.
The Commons Privileges Committee's year-long investigation found that the former prime minister's repeated infractions with his Partygate denials.
If he had continued to serve as an MP, it is suggested that he should have been expelled from the Commons for 90 days.
Rishi Sunak hasn't said yet if he'll cast a vote on the report's conclusions.
The vote, which is anticipated to take place on Monday evening following a debate, will be a free vote for Tory MPs, meaning party managers, also known as whips, won't tell them what to do.
Although it is anticipated that the report will pass easily, it is unclear whether a vote will be recorded because Mr. Johnson has asked his allies to refrain from voting against it.
There's a chance that some Conservative MPs won't vote or won't show up.
Michael Gove, the housing secretary who also served in Mr. Johnson's cabinet, has confirmed he will abstain, making him the only official in the Sunak government to make such a declaration.
He told the BBC in an interview on Sunday that Mr. Johnson's behavior had occasionally fallen short of expectations, but he disagreed with the report's recommendation for a 90-day suspension.
The vote presents a difficult political challenge for the prime minister, who is engaged in a savage verbal altercation with his former boss over his resignation honors list.
Upon taking office, Mr. Sunak vowed to place "integrity" at the center of his administration, and he will face pressure from opposition MPs to accept the cross-party committee's recommendations.
However, supporting it would anger Mr. Johnson's supporters, some of whom have criticized the committee for its findings.
In a furious statement announcing his resignation from the House of Commons prior to the release of the report, Mr. Johnson himself also attacked the committee, calling it a "kangaroo court.".
Votes in the Commons are typically taken by voice, with a division — in which MPs go through the voting lobbies to record their support — only being called if the Speaker believes the outcome is not clear-cut.
If no MP in the room shouts "no," there won't be a division, and the votes of individual MPs won't be recorded. Opposition MPs are anticipated to shout "aye" later to approve the report.
When Mr. Johnson assured MPs following the Partygate scandal that lockdown procedures had always been followed in No. 10, the privileges committee claimed in their report that he had been intentionally misleading them.
Mr. Johnson maintained throughout the investigation that his assurances were given in good faith and were supported by official advice.
However, the MPs discovered that he had "personal knowledge" of events that violated the rules and had neglected to "pro-actively" look into claims that Covid rules had been broken during the pandemic.
They came to the conclusion that he had repeatedly engaged in "contempt" of Parliament, including by disparaging the committee, which they added justified the 90-day suspension, which is lengthy by recent standards.
The report also urges against granting Mr. Johnson a parliamentary pass, which he would otherwise be eligible for as a former member of parliament.
Many of Mr. Johnson's allies have blasted the committee's conclusions.
When the committee "overreached," according to Nadine Dorries, who served as Mr. Johnson's cabinet's secretary for culture, party members would "hold to account" any Tory MP who voted in favor of it.
It's unclear how many of his allies will ultimately show up to voice their opposition, though.
