For performing an abortion after the permitted time limit, a mother-of-three was sentenced to more than two years in prison.
The 44-year-old patient was prescribed the drug after a telephone consultation during which she lied about how far along she was in her pregnancy.
The "pills by post" program, which was implemented during lockdown, was intended to be used for unintended pregnancies up to 10 weeks.
The woman was between 32 and 34 weeks pregnant at the time she took them, the Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court was informed.
Up to 24 weeks, abortion is legal; however, after 10 weeks, the procedure must be done in a clinic.
The unnamed woman, who had provided false information knowing she had exceeded the time limit, was accused by the prosecution of having "carefully planned" her actions by conducting online searches.
The court was informed that she had searched for "how to lose a baby at six months," "how to have an abortion without going to a doctor," and "how to hide a pregnancy bump" between February and May 2020.
She received the tablets because it was believed she was seven weeks pregnant based on the information she gave the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS).
After taking the pills on May 11, 2020, at 18:39 BST, she called for help stating that she was in labor.
The baby was delivered during the phone call without breathing, and about 45 minutes later, it was determined that it had died.
According to a post-mortem examination, the baby girl's cause of death was stillbirth and maternal use of abortion drugs, and her gestational age was determined to be between 32 and 34 weeks.
The woman was initially accused of child destruction, which she denied. She already had three sons before becoming pregnant again in 2019.
She later entered a plea of guilty to a different charge under section 58 of the Offenses Against Person Act 1861, procuring an abortion by the use of instruments or the administration of drugs, to which the prosecution agreed.
