A man who had been turned down for a liver transplant six times finally received the gift of life from his mother after it was discovered that she was a donor match.
In a 12-hour operation, 27-year-old Connor Meyrick received 65% of his mother Michelle's liver, and the pair are now both recovering at their Swindon home.
His rare genetic disorder Caroli's syndrome, which necessitates a liver transplant to avoid death, was present from birth.
After waiting for so long, he said, "It feels amazing to be able to plan my future.".
The procedure, which was performed in March at the Royal Free Hospital in London, has given Mr. Meyrick a "new lust for life.".
He said, "It feels amazing to be able to plan after being unable to for so long, and I've already booked tickets for a concert in Liverpool, seeing Jimmy Carr, and a trip to the Newbury Races.".
Who knows, in not too distant time I might be able to travel abroad once more.
Having been placed on the transplant waiting list three years ago, Mr. Meyrick admitted that each time he didn't receive a donor liver, "it was extremely difficult to deal with.".
His symptoms grew worse as the years went by.
I had terrible acne, under-the-skin itching, excruciating headaches, extreme exhaustion, and my skin was very yellow because I was jaundiced, Mr. Meyrick said.
Additionally, being on the list mandated that I always be two hours or less from the hospital, so I was unable to travel. ".
He claimed that it got to the point where he could no longer go to work.
A live liver transplant was an option Ms. Meyrick said she was "keen" to investigate.
Sincerely, the 54-year-old admitted, "I would have done anything for Connor.".
He was apprehensive about putting me through a major procedure, and I had to persuade him that doing this was the right thing for everyone and that, if the tables had been turned, he would have done it for me.
The fact that I won't have to worry about how far he is from a hospital before I can let him go means the world to me.
