Glenfield-Krankenhaus

To help ambulances return to service more quickly, two hospitals will receive a £3.6 million upgrade.

According to the new plans, Glenfield Hospital and Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI) will both receive new ambulance hubs and discharge lounges.

Last winter, patients were left waiting in line for hours in front of LRI in ambulances.

The NHS does, however, anticipate that the new facilities will free up beds and shorten the wait times for admission to A&E.

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust set up a "temporary escalation area" consisting of a bus and a tent to take those patients when accident and emergency was full because the lines at LRI had gotten so bad.

In response to mounting pressure, the emergency treatment area was established.

The new 35-bed ambulance hub will eventually take the place of the bus and tent, and a second 35-bed facility will also be built at Glenfield Hospital.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, new discharge lounges will also be constructed at both hospitals.

A patient who is ready to be discharged from the hospital but needs to wait for transportation or medication will be transferred to one of the lounges, which promise to offer "a more comfortable environment" with TVs, hot meals, and nurses who can tend to people's needs.

To pay for the work at the two sites, Leicestershire will receive a total of £3.6 million from the government. Additionally, Leicester General was given £1,015,000,000 to upgrade its 12-bed discharge lounge.

The investment in discharge areas and ambulance infrastructure at our hospitals is extremely good news for the residents of Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland, according to the trust's chief operating officer, Jon Melbourne.

"Last year, in an effort to decrease the time it takes for an ambulance to change hands, the emergency department at Leicester Royal Infirmary installed a temporary ambulance escalation facility.

"The facility enhanced the experience for patients arriving in ambulances while enabling us to release ambulances more quickly on a consistent basis.

"Investment in making this facility permanent and extending to Glenfield will better position us for the hefty crowds we encounter in the winter.
