The Moldovan Interior Ministry reported that a man opened fire at Chisinau International Airport, killing two people.
Police stated that the shooter was injured and in custody.
The shooting occurred after a foreign national was turned away from the country, according to the interior ministry.
Authorities have confirmed two victims, according to the interior ministry. A border guard and an airport security official were among the two fatalities, according to President Maia Sandu.
Unverified rumors claimed that the suspect was a Russian national who had taken hostages before hiding out in a room. As the building was being evacuated, passengers could be seen in videos sitting on the grass outside the airport.
The largest airport in the nation, Chisinau, has suspended all incoming and outgoing flights.
Since President Sandu claimed that Russia was plotting to use foreign "saboteurs" to overthrow her pro-European Union government, Moldova has been on high alert.
A candidate for EU membership since last summer, Moldova has a population of 2.6 million.
Due to tensions with Transnistria, a pro-Moscow breakaway region where 1,500 Russian soldiers are stationed, it has been severely impacted by the conflict in the neighboring Ukraine.
In a statement, President Sandu said it was "a sad day for all of us" and expressed sympathy to the families of the victims.
State security forces, according to her, were on high alert throughout the nation.
