While on vacation in Fiji, an Australian boy, age 8, passed away from what appears to have been electrocution.
The child was a Sydney native named Cairo Winitana who was staying with his parents at the Club Wyndham Denarau Island Resort on Fiji's main island.
According to Fiji police, he was discovered last Thursday lying "motionless" next to a flower garden at the hotel.
He was transported to a hospital in the neighboring city of Nadi, but he was pronounced dead.
The post-mortem will have to confirm that the child was, according to the preliminary information gathered, electrocuted, according to Fiji police.
They added that the boy was an Australian citizen who was from New Zealand. The family is receiving assistance, according to a spokeswoman for New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
His mother Amber de Thierry wrote on Facebook that she would always love him: "I loved you my son from the moment I found out I was carrying you and will love you forever more.".
An online fundraiser started by a relative stated that the family now had "the heartbreaking job" of bringing their son back to Australia.
As you can all imagine, this loss has been extremely devastating for our family.
The Milperra Colts, the team Cairo played for, wrote in a tribute on Facebook that he would be remembered as "a shy, tough little kid who loved his footy.".
The death was referred to as a "tragic accident" by a resort spokesperson, who also offered the family "heartfelt condolences.".
The spokesperson promised a thorough investigation and full cooperation with the police and neighborhood authorities.
Denarau Island, which is located 5 kilometers (3 miles) to the northwest of Nadi, the third-largest city in Fiji, is renowned for its opulent resorts and hotels.
