Most Nicaraguans get their news primarily from radio and television. More than 100 radio stations, many of them in the nation's capital, as well as a number of TV networks are present.
According to Reporters Without Borders, "Journalism as a whole is stigmatized.". The group claims that journalists experience intimidation, arbitrary detention, and death threats.
According to Freedom House, a large number of major TV networks support specific political parties or groups, and members of the ruling class have financial ties to media companies. The Ortega administration "engages in systematic attempts to obstruct and discredit media critics," the statement claims.
The Daniel Ortega regime "launched a strong wave of repression against opposition politicians, civil organizations, and independent media," according to RSF, which has led to virtually no independent media in the nation.
According to Internetworldstats.com, 63 percent of the population, or 4.2 million people, used the internet in July 2022.
