Polish bus driver from Derby completes three-day journey

In Paris, Andrew Cowell

Using only buses and coaches, a man traveled 1,148 miles (2,847 km) to Poland in three days.

On Wednesday morning, 47-year-old Andrew Cowell left his Derby home.

Before arriving in Krakow at around 19:00 BST on Friday, he took seven buses and two international coaches.

Using the government's $2 bus fare cap program, Mr. Cowell previously found fame by completing a number of journeys across England.

He acknowledged that going to Poland was not a practical way to travel a great distance, but it was an "interesting journey" that brought to light more sustainable transportation options.

Long-distance European coach travel had never been done before, according to Mr. Cowell.

He said, "My journey was interesting and I have enjoyed it.

"I quite enjoy staring out the window and just observing how the landscapes have changed and just taking in what's around me.

"It was interesting to see the different countries because we passed through Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic before arriving in Poland. ".

From his home in Derby to central London, Mr. Cowell took seven buses.

He next took a coach to Paris before continuing on for another nearly 22-hour coach ride to Krakow.

Before boarding his last coach, Mr. Cowell was able to spend a few hours in Paris.

Although he claimed the trip was effortless, the distance may have been set a little too high.

He remarked, "I'm not sure I'd do quite such a long journey again.

I wasn't surprised that I didn't get a lot of sleep because I hadn't expected to.

"I would think about taking shorter trips where I may have previously flown or rented a car. ".

Mr. Cowell has already successfully completed bus challenges throughout England, including a 320-mile trip from Derby to Cornwall during which he took advantage of the government's $2 bus fare cap program.

He claimed that for public transportation to be simpler and more appealing to users, it needed a better network.

But he hoped that by sharing his experience, others would be motivated to explore other types of travel.

It "shows that we do still have these kinds of public transportation networks and it's worth using and remembering they're there, even if you don't use them to quite such an extreme way that I have," he said.
