Dermot Kennedy, an Irish singer, has expressed regret for using an offensive racial slur during a Canadian interview.
In a song that was uploaded to Much, a well-known music channel, the musician used a term that the Traveller community views negatively.
He apologized for any offense he may have caused on social media on Tuesday night.
He wrote, "I never mean to hurt anyone with the words I say, and I wasn't referring to anyone specifically.
"Therefore, I apologize if I upset you. ".
After the videos were deleted without acknowledgement or justification, members of the community demanded an apology.
The performer is currently on a North American tour, and it is believed that the interview took place on June 10 in Toronto.
Irish radio station Newstalk was informed by Dublin senator Eileen Flynn that she had sent Mr. Kennedy an email in response to his remark.
By becoming the first member of the Traveling community to sit in the Seanad, the Irish Parliament's upper house, Ms. Flynn made history back in 2020.
In her remarks on Tuesday, she praised the singer as a role model for kids and young wandering men but called his remark "very foolish.".
I don't believe he was thinking, and the more I watch the video, the more compassion I feel for him, she said.
"Some travelers take offense at the word knackered, while others don't, but regrettably, we shouldn't use it at all.
