Ukraine media guide

In a televised speech to the Ukrainian people, President Volodymyr Zelensky

The diverse media landscape of Ukraine has been significantly impacted by Russia's invasion.

The major media outlets have all adopted a uniformly defiant and patriotic approach to their reporting on the war, whereas they previously presented a diversity of viewpoints.

The top TV networks, including the public broadcaster and several significant commercial stations, launched a pooled 24-hour news service in an effort to promote national cohesion and mobilize Ukrainians behind the war effort.

Since the outbreak of the main conflict, Ukrainians have changed the way they consume media. Social media has supplanted television as their primary news source, while new TV channels have continued to be launched despite the fighting.

Additional steps were taken by the government to stifle pro-Russian narratives in the year leading up to the war, including the closure of three news outlets connected to prominent pro-Moscow figures.

Russian media has nearly complete control over the annexed Crimea and the rebel-held regions of the Donbas.

Although there were many difficulties, including misinformation on social media and a lack of accountability for violence against journalists, Ukraine generally enjoyed a much freer media environment than its closest post-Soviet neighbors during times of peace.

While independent media typically relied on grants and donations, the most popular TV channels were controlled by tycoons.

According to Internetworldstats.com, 41 million people, or 94% of the population, used the internet in July 2022.
