To raise money for the first stage of building a new conservation zoo, a former parking lot for the Bristol Zoo was sold.

The first stage of building a new conservation zoo at Wild Place Project will be funded by proceeds from the sale of the parking lot that was formerly used by zoo guests and employees.

The Hill Group has bought the brownfield property that has been vacant since September.

According to the group, 62 homes will be constructed there.

The Bristol Zoological Society is building new play areas and visitor facilities at the Wild Place Project, which will be known as the Bristol Zoo Project starting in the summer of 2023.

The plans also include habitats for novel species, a campus for scientists and students studying conservation, and breeding facilities for animals in grave danger.

Although much of the green space will be preserved, the Bristol Zoo site will be converted into housing.

"The sale follows Bristol City Council's decision to grant planning permission for West Car Park at the end of last year," said Justin Morris, chief executive of the Bristol Zoological Society.

"Since we have lived in Clifton since 1836, we want to leave a lasting legacy that we can all be proud of.

"It's fantastic to see how the redevelopment of this significant historical site is coming along. ".

As a result of the denial of a request for a judicial review of the decision, the site's planning permission is no longer subject to challenge.
