Red pandas have been missing from a zoo since the euthanasia of its second resident after a week of illness.

After Mei Mei, age nine, displayed "further signs of discomfort," Marwell bid her farewell on Monday.

Red pandas are temporarily absent from the zoo near Winchester as a result of her male companion Peter's unrelated death in October.

"We fully intend to bring this species back into the park as soon as possible," Marwell said. ".

Mei Mei
Mei Mei was described by the zoo as a "firm favorite" by visitors because of her "endearing looks and personality.".

Mei Mei arrived at Marwell in 2014 after being born in 2013 at Welsh Mountain Zoo.

Due to her "endearing looks and personality," the park claimed she was a "firm favorite" with visitors.

Following a recent avian flu outbreak that resulted in the deaths of eight penguins, the park currently has movement restrictions in place.

The zoo's decision to add new red pandas will therefore be made in the upcoming weeks.
