Scotland fails to meet its goal for greenhouse gas emissions

Following a recovery from the pandemic, Scotland's goal for reducing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming has been missed.

Although the goal for this year was a 51.1 percent reduction, overall emissions are currently 49.9 percent lower than they were in 1990.

The Scottish government has fallen short of its legally required goal eight times in the last twelve years.

With a contribution of 26.2 percent, domestic transport continues to be the main source of emissions.

Despite a 10 percent increase in the transportation category, car emissions are still 17 point 5 percent lower than they were in 2019, the year prior to the pandemic.

Domestic aviation emissions are still only a small portion of all transportation emissions, but they are unchanged from 2020 levels and down by half from 2019.

As the second-largest source of emissions, agriculture has just barely surpassed industry.

Carbon dioxide and methane are two of the seven greenhouse gases used in the calculations used to determine the figures.

Shipping, business aviation, and international aviation have all seen decreases in emissions.

In the energy supply sector, emissions decreased by another sizable 9 point 2 percent, or 77 point 6 percent, since 1990, the base year.

The figures attribute the most recent decline to a decrease in the use of fossil fuels for the production of electricity.

However, the figures do not account for Hunterston B nuclear power station's closure in January 2022. Power from renewable sources fell sharply, while nuclear power increased.
