How Friends on TV has aided Scarpa at Forest, according to Gustavo Scarpa

At Nottingham Forest, midfielder Gustavo Scarpa hopes to apply the lessons he learned from the television series Friends.

The Brazilian teammate of Renan Lodi, Felipe, and Danilo, the 28-year-old credits the comedy for his command of the English language. He uses it as their resident translator.

These players are among the 29 that Premier League Forest has acquired this year.

They need to improve their English, and I'm happy to help because they are talented and decent people, said Scarpa.

It's great to have friends from Brazil here, but I've already told them that I don't want to be limited to speaking Portuguese because I came to this country to learn about another culture and sharpen my English.

"I still have the impression that this is all a dream. It's a crazy atmosphere.

"The songs that are playing on the pitch are ones that I used to only hear in video games.

The skateboarding, Rubik's Cube-solving playmaker Scarpa claims he feels like the East Midlands club's supporters have welcomed him with open arms.

Since moving from Brazilian club Palmeiras in January, he has made seven appearances.

Scarpa has previously discussed the allure of competing in England's premier league and even demonstrated his attempt at an English accent.

Scarpa started speaking the language early while his fellow Brazilians were still learning it.

He recalled how his father had encouraged him and his sister to watch and listen to a lot of English-language films ever since they were young children.

When I was 14 or 15 years old, I realized I was speaking English because I had started to watch a lot of Friends with Portuguese subtitles.

Although Scarpa wants to get everyone on the field speaking the same language, his main goal is to ensure that Forest stays in the Premier League.

The Reds have improved to 13th in the standings since the beginning of the year and have not lost a league match.

He told BBC East Midlands Today, "I think we are better now than a couple of games ago.

"We're looking for something bigger. Naturally, one of them will remain in the Premier League for the upcoming season, but I believe we can go further than that.
