Women's Super League: Man United seeks championship, Arsenal and Man City rematch

Women's Super League: Man United seeks championship, Arsenal and Man City rematch

Football games rarely end in goalless draws, but two such games in the Women's Super League last weekend may have significant implications for the remainder of the campaign.

Chelsea is in the driver's seat to defend their WSL title after Everton held Manchester United at bay and Arsenal at West Ham.

Leicester is still at the bottom of the table in the relegation battle, but Reading and Brighton are still anxiously watching their backs. How much lower will Tottenham go?

In this weekend's final round of WSL games before March, there are five things to look forward to.

(First Part) "You again?".

Less than 72 hours after their previous League Cup match, Manchester City and Arsenal square off once more in a match that could make or break their hopes of winning the WSL.

With Arsenal having a game in hand, they both trail leaders Chelsea by five points, but Gunners manager Jonas Eidevall believes they can use the 1-0 victory from midweek to their advantage. However, it may all come down to which team recovers the fastest.

Following Wednesday's victory at Meadow Park, he said, "It's going to be a good guessing game for them.

But to make it more difficult for opponents to prepare for us, that's also part of the reason it's important to have two different systems. If we are aware of how to use it, our adversaries won't be able to tell whether we are using one or the other. They must prepare much more difficultly as a result.

"Most of the time, it depends on what each player does to rest and recover, such as how well they sleep or take ice baths. For Thursday and Friday, you need to be the best in the world at those tasks; it will make a difference on Saturday.

Gareth Taylor, the manager of Manchester City, downplayed the game's importance as a decisive one.

Both teams are well-versed in one another, he claimed. Knowing what they are up against, you will see them jump right in from the start.

"Playing a team repeatedly can be advantageous. It's not necessary to overthink it.

"No one in this room needs to be reminded of its significance, but we don't treat the game as a must-win. We put a lot of emphasis on performance levels. We can succeed if we perform well on those levels.

(Part Two) You again?

Since it's not a regular matchday but rather a free weekend, only four WSL games are played, including some that were postponed in September after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

One of those matches is Brighton vs. Aston Villa, which was originally scheduled to take place at Amex Stadium last year but will now be played at Broadfield Stadium on Sunday instead after the teams' 1-1 draw at Walsall the previous week.

Carla Ward, the manager of Villa, says she is happy to face the same opponents twice because last week's draw felt like a loss because they had the majority of the chances.

Playing the same team twice in a row is usually not something she enjoys, she admitted. But this time, I'm happy because we were able to extract some bones this week.

We were the better team in that game and earned a good point, but we ought to have won. There were a lot of things I didn't like about the performance, so it's up to the players to fix it.

For Tottenham, a record crowd.

Rehanne Skinner
Since October 30, Tottenham has not triumphed in a league match under Rehanne Skinner.

Tottenham vs. Manchester United is a different matchup from September. Unlike Brighton, Spurs will still have the opportunity to play at the stadium used by the men's team.

At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, more than 30,000 people are anticipated, which could surpass the 38,262 fans who attended the north London derby in 2019 as the club's record home crowd.

Spurs manager Rehanne Skinner acknowledges it will be a difficult task against title-chasing United after losing six straight WSL games, but that a large home crowd could provide the boost they require.

It's such a great atmosphere inside that stadium, she said. The audience is the 12th participant. They give you that encouragement, and it's just a wonderful place to play. It provides the elevated lift we require each time we visit. We really want to give the audience a good show.

With the English charge, Kearns will continue.

A victory over Leicester this weekend would all but guarantee another season of WSL football for Liverpool, who beat Reading last Sunday. This was a crucial step in their effort to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

Missy Bo Kearns will be crucial for the move into mid-table after she scored the opening goal against Reading. This week, she revealed to BBC Sport that she is aiming for a spot in the England World Cup squad.

As Kearns continues to acclimate to the WSL following last season's promotion, Liverpool manager Matt Beard claims that she will be crucial to his team for the remainder of the season.

She is a very talented player, and the world is at her feet, he said. "Moving from the Championship to the WSL is challenging. Since you're competing with some of the best players in the world, the first half of the season was a learning curve.

"You can now see that she has more freedom to move forward, that spark and creativity. She has since added goals and assists. She will be evaluated on that as an attacking midfielder.

Missy Bo Kearns
This season, Missy Bo Kearns has two goals in 11 WSL games.

Man Utd have lofty goals.

Manchester United can overtake Tottenham if they win, as Chelsea will not be playing this weekend.

Marc Skinner's team has never won the WSL, but with Chelsea expected to spend a significant amount of time away from league play after making the League Cup final, his team has a chance to gain ground.

We enter every game trying to win, Skinner said during his press conference on Wednesday. This team is genuinely only focused on winning, and I've tried everything to change that.

After failing to convert dominance into goals against Everton in a 0-0 draw, his team lost ground to Chelsea last weekend.

We won't take anything for granted this time, and we'll try to take advantage of opportunities.
