Potential Civil War stronghold revealed by Hartlebury Castle crop marks

Inn at Hartlebury

Archaeologists claim that crop marks at a 13th-century castle point to the location of a possible civil war bastion.

The hot July of 2022 saw a drone from the Worcestershire Archive and Archaeology Service fly over Kidderminster's Hartlebury Castle.

The service's Tim Cornah expressed his "surprise and delight" after seeing aerial footage that suggested a discovery.

The service is requesting money to begin a dig.

Hartlebury Castle
Bishops of Worcester lived in the castle at various times.

According to Mr. Cornah, crop marks can appear where previous features have been excavated into the ground and backfilled with material that retains moisture better than the local geology, resulting in relatively lush grass.

According to him, the crop marks at the castle were at least 197 feet (60 meters) across (east to west) and 164 feet (50 meters) across (north to south) and looked like a triangle.

He further stated that nothing similar had ever been discovered at the castle and that, prior to the discovery, no one was aware of any civil war defenses there.
